Google and YouTube: Making Beautiful Music Together (for You to Buy)

pressplayGoogle has its eye on the music industry, and as we all know, Google usually gets what it wants. This time, Google wants to conquer the music industry completely, using YouTube as its foot soldier.YouTube is already owned by Googleand attracts more viewers in that all-important 18-34 age demographic than MTV, as ArtisanTalent.com points out. It’s the perfect vehicle for a music industry takeover, and Google is already setting the pieces in place to make its move. Here are Google’s plans for becoming a major music industry player through the power of YouTube.

 

The YouTube Music Awards

This is a major part of Google’s strategy to achieve music industry domination. This is a brand new awards show that will debut November 3, 2013 and is expected to rival the 30-year success of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) on its first outing according to Mashable,. Once MTV’s VMA is conquered, Google will amp up its promotional efforts to achieve bigger ratings for the YouTube Music Awards in future years than industry award show staples like the Grammys.

Attracting the Interest of Advertisers as Well as Music Industry Executives

The YouTube Music Awards is expected to attract the attention of advertisers and music industry executives alike. It’s been heavily promoted for months, and it is backed by Google’s endless ocean of money. Add to that the fact that YouTube is already creating legitimate music stars of its own who don’t have record company contracts, and it’s easy to see Google’s strategy for changing the music industry’s hierarchy to put itself at the top as a leading producer, as Business Week explains.

Advertisers are already expressing interest in being a part of the YouTube Music Awards. It’s the perfect opportunity for them to put themselves in front of young adults with disposable income. Kia has already signed on as the show’s title sponsor and Google is courting other big-name advertisers to the show. No word has come out as to what Google will be charging advertisers who sign on for the YouTube Music Awards, but according to Div8.net, it’s expected to be up to 25 percent higher than regular advertising rates for a web-broadcast program.

Taking a Leadership Position in Music Production

Google has been putting a lot of time, effort, and money into making the YouTube Music Awards a show to remember. It will be a 90-minute live show with plenty of star power. Lady Gaga, Eminem, and other big name acts have already signed on to perform. The fact that these big music stars are willing to perform and their labels have given their permission for it are both indicators that the awards show is expected to be a big deal. Industry executives are going to watch how Google handles the show to know what kind of competition the company may give them going forward.

The show will be live streaming from YouTube. Cable companies like Direct TV offer HD DVR receivers to customers that allow YouTube to be shown on TV screens for more comfortable viewing. Because it will be launching Google as a respected music producer, it promises to be must-see viewing.

Google has seen the potential to discover and promote new music artists just like Netflix grabbed a piece of the television industry by creating and airing original programming. Now that solid plans are in place and a big kick-off event is scheduled, there’s no stopping Google’s forward momentum in this area. The YouTube Music Awards is Google’s way of telling competitors it’s serious.

Discover Your Next Favorite Artist With Set.fm

set-fm-logo-july-24-with-tag-reversedIn this age of digitalization, everything we once did, read, learned, heard, saw, a mere decade ago, has been coded, miniaturized (handheld accessible) or blown up to the big screen, putting a whole meaning to the Disney “it’s a small world after all,” jam.

In this ‘small’ world we can find receipts or reservations, read books, watch movies, and yes listen to music, without putting one device down. And as new ideas, inventions, applications surface one has to begin to wonder where the next advancement will come from? How revolutionary will it be? Who will think of it?

But the reality of the situation is that when most new inventions are described, they don’t seem that revolutionary, that incredible, rather pretty basic, intuitive notions. Everyone can admit the iPod and iTunes were groundbreaking inventions, being able to store and access your whole music library in one place. Being able to share this music? Seems like a pretty simple idea. So now that there is a seemingly never-ending advancement in the finding, sharing, and producing of music from iTunes to Spotify to Pandora to last.Fm, it seems difficult to imagine the next big step in the music industry.

Well, once again, that revolutionary idea may not be so crazy, so out of left field, instead it’s probably right in front of your face resulting in the proverbial: “why didn’t I think of that?” And it appears that set.fm has come up with an idea to share, almost immediately, live music performances. Now when I first read this, I didn’t quite see the scope of the idea, nor its implications.

The scope and implications of this advent both revolve around the new popular musical sounds of the generation and the festivals and live concerts that they foster. Bass, synthetic, and hi-hat heavy sounds have taken over the music industry in the form of “Trap” and “House Music.” But where is the connection between Trap music and set.fm‘s attempt to bring live shows to your home?

Well what sets House and Trap music apart from other genre’s is the live show artists put on. No longer does a musician stand idle in the middle of the stage eloquently annunciating, or pace back and forth across stage slamming guitars against the floor and kicking over amplifiers. Instead, concerts have turned into light shows- manipulating lights and laser to coordinate with bass heavy music, attempting to form a bridge between the visuals and acoustics.

Imagine basic star gazing, sitting in an open field with a telescope, admiring stars light years away; versus sitting in a massive planetarium, watching the light years fly by your face, feeling the heat emitted from the stars, and the massive empty space in front and behind you. Suc concerts have in turn fostered countless large music festivals all over the world- from England to Spain, Australia to Germany, and Los Angeles to New York. The set.fm will give you access to all these venues from the comfort of your home, minus the grossly expensive weekend pass…. I wish I thought of that.

Music Therapy for Children With Autism?

Most children with Autism have difficulty with performing eye contact; music therapy works to help this in miraculous and numerous ways. The therapist starts by evaluating the child’s current base level, and then strategizes the best methods to help the child. After many sessions, they measure where the child has arrived. “Eye contact” refers to an event where child looks at the therapist while playing. Using Music Therapy, the therapists increased “turn taking” and eye contact measurably more than play therapy. Eye Contact was even proved to be held longer when the child was participating in music therapy activities.

Acoustic_GuitarThe music therapist has to reach the child to be able to interact with them and help them. The British Colombian Music Therapy association says that when the child feels free and unthreatened, they get more out of the session. When children with autism were not being told “don’t do this or don’t do that” and “no” to everything they were doing; it did wonders on their ability to express themselves.

Music therapy gives them a way to express themselves without being yelled at and told “no.” The tempo and rhythm of the instruments is a way for the children to express themselves. The British Colombia MTA states that the tempo and rhythm gets the child to progress from the rocking motion when they were in the womb and as a baby. It gives them a new independent feeling. Music therapy is one of the cutting edge therapies according to Tony Lyons. It also helps develop motor skills for the child to interact with the instruments. What an innovation.

It is important to understand the term “Turn Taking” which refers (according to the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorder) to an event involving a sequence of turns to play alternating between the child and therapist. The therapist will measure frequency and the duration of eye contact. Music Therapy is proving to be effective as both parents and music therapists are seeing results; both recorded many testimonials. Both therapists and mothers agree that they see more eye contact improvement in their children with autism after exposing them to music therapy. Music Therapy can help children with autism with relationship skills by helping them communicate through music.

Every instrument can be and is a tool to help children to want to communicate. The music the children with autism hear or produce pulls them farther out of their own world and helps create interactions with things, first as the instruments, and later people. Music Therapy gives children another way to communicate other than verbally. This helps them to want to communicate in general.

Many different toys and musical instruments are used in a therapy session. Instruments and toys look similar especially in color and number. The therapists found out that it made no difference to the child what instrument was used or what the color was. Connecting this to communication, they also point out that play therapy does not take as much working with others as music therapy does.

The parents are eager to see results in order to invest the money into music therapy for their child. Results are seen in a year but parents are impressed by the results that music therapy shows in their child’s behavior. Many therapists believe that Music Therapy may be an effective method for increasing joint attention skills in some children with autism. Most children with Autism have difficulty with performing eye contact; music therapy works to help this in miraculous and numerous ways.Undoubtedly Music Therapy can and had had a major impact on some children’s lives.

The Scoop on Zach Zalon, Former President of Virgin Digital

I recently talked with Zach Zalon, the co-founder of Wilshire Axon and former President of Virgin Digital, the digital platform for Virgin’s Entertainment Group. We discussed his inspiration for launching Virgin Digital and the philosophies that have structure his career.

Zalon attributed most of his career to the fundamental philosophy that was created when he worked as manager at the Troubador club, a live music nightclub. He spoke of the clubs ability to showcase up-and-coming artists that didn’t have a big following by bookending a major label act with these new artists. “Our philosophy was to democratize, in some respects, access to fans by using the bigger bands that were going to draw all those people to our club as the gateway to that bands fan base.” The philosophy that was created from this was the underlying desire to support independent artists that didn’t have the proper following or support.

He took that philosophy with him when he left the Troubador. At that time, the Internet was in its early states, and Zalon teamed up with his connections in the music world to use the Internet as another vehicle for expanding an artist’s access to new audiences, which inspired him to branch out and create his own consulting firm, The Factory Network.

Transitioning into his career with Virgin, Zalon explains that Virgin had been a client of The Factory Network (TFN), and they had worked with the company to do a variety of things. TFN wrote a business plan for what they thought would be a fairly innovative service called Radio Free Virgin, a global, online radio service that connected very deeply with the mega stores around the world to drive a fairly significant audience. When Richard Branson funded it, Zalon and his team decided to close down TFN and take on the project for Virgin full time.

After many years with Virgin, Zalon and his team spun out of the company and created two separate companies, Wilshire Axon and Hello Music. Zalon and his team used the blueprinting methods they had created during their time at Virgin and established a digital product design firm. Hello Music started from the teams desire to help artists. The idea behind it is to pre-negotiate opportunities that, up until now, only major acts have gotten access to and providing that access to artists anywhere in America in a standardized experience.

When asked what he most wanted to be remembered for Zalon said that he didn’t feel like he had been around long enough for a legacy, but rather explained that the three things he and his team were focused on were helping large companies create amazing digital experiences for their customers, helping independent artists get support, and an overarching focus on the city of Los Angles.

The New Myspace: All or Nothing

Ah Myspace, the website that brought social networking and social media into the homes of the masses. Once the king of the internet, valued at $12 billion and becoming the most visited website in the world, it has since been dethroned and fallen from grace. Or has it? It was recently purchased by Specific Media and Justin Timberlake in June 2011 for $35 million with hopes of breathing new life into the company. But will they be able to reclaim the throne in a much more crowded kingdom? The answer to that remains to be scene but based on the preview it looks like something worth getting excited about.

The obvious issue is that there are already enough, if not too many, social networks for the average user. Between Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Youtube, Google+ and the many others, the internet has become inundated with social media. Billed as a way to connect artists and fans, the MySpace team at Specific media has taken a smart approach by letting users integrate their Facebook and Twitter accounts rather than having to create a new one. With celebrities and artists already connecting with fans via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram perhaps integration and consolidating is something we need more of.

Seamless integration and creative design are two big things the new Myspace has going for it. Based on the preview video posted by Justin Timberlake, the website does look gorgeous and functional; 2 issues which plagued it in the past. Perhaps the biggest thing it has going for it is the music feature, which is something it actually always did exceptionally well.

Once a great way for big names and local bands alike to post songs, event info, pictures, etc, it will now let users create and share playlists, listen to whole albums, discover new music based on recommendations, and more. A cool feature for the artists is an analytics page which provides demographic breakdowns of their audiences by age, gender, region, etc. Myspace currently boasts one of the largest music catalogues on the internet, albeit from mostly unknown artists, at 42 million songs. If they can get some big artists and labels on board or even integrate with other services like Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, or Rhapsody then it could very well come back to life.

There’s still a lot that is up in the air for the new Myspace but if it can find a way to get over the hump, play nicely with the other social networks, and deliver great content then I think it will be a success. If it can’t create a pleasant, clutter-free, and unique experience for the user then it may be time to just let it die out.
