Tune in for my powerful interview with Brent Bourgeois

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 3.57.42 PM

Brent Bourgeois is a long-time colleague and notable American rock musician, songwriter, and producer who most recently worked with Julian Lennon on their single ‘The High Road‘ off of his New Album ‘Don’t Look Back’ (with sales supporting Julian’s White Feather Foundation).

Brent was co-leader of the band Bourgeois Tagg with Larry Tagg, whose second album, “YoYo”, was recorded with esteemed producer Todd Rundgren (long-time collaborator of mine). I tried to sign them to EMI during my tenure in A&R there but Island got them instead. Brent then went on to do several solo albums, and then to serve as the Vice President of A&R at Word Records in Nashville from 1997-2001. He just distributed his first solo album in twenty years entitled “Don’t Look Back” through a new paradigm called “kick-finishing” empowering fans as a street-team of sorts to help market and evangelize this amazing new CD.  It’s a testament to the power of collaboration based on long-term relationships with trusted artist colleagues, and the songs on this CD are exceptional; pure bliss.

Celebrating 50 Years of Being Julian. A Lennon Legacy and a White Feather of Hope

Today is my wonderful friend Julian Lennon’s 50th birthday. Happy Birthday Jules!

Julian Blog Photography Today is a great day to talk about legacy and connection. I first spotted Julian Lennon when I was a young girl. The Beatles were on TV – they were everywhere by then – this time, however, way on the left, on the side of the stage, sat a young boy, obviously just about my age.  To me, he looked lost, almost forlorn.  I didn’t know he was John’s son, but my connection to him was immediate and strong. While other friends would go crazy watching for Paul or John, I would closely scan all Beatles concerts and appearances, looking for that young man – who of course, turned out to be Julian.

While John Lennon made a huge effort to be there for his second son, Sean, it was a lesson learned by painfully not being present for Julian’s life after John’s divorce from Cynthia, Julian’s mother. Julian Blog with John Young

Several years after John’s passing, Julian’s debut album came out – and like many people did at the time, I actually thought it WAS John. The resemblance between the two was astounding.  Of course, it was not a lost John Lennon track – it was Julian singing Valotte – a massively talented artist in his own right. (Like so many children of rock stars, separating his own art from the shadow of his dad’s legacy would not be easy.)

Many years later again, I was lucky enough to meet Julian – to share some strategic ideas and talk about possibly collaborating down the road, should the opportunity arise.  We shared a deeply moving conversation that day about his life and his work – and we discussed the amazing (and diverse) body of work that Julian had created to that point – as a musician and as a photographer.  (You can see Julian talk about his photography in an interview with CBS Morning Show.)

At our meeting, after a warm greeting and a hug that spoke more of old friendship than new colleagues, I shared with Jules a two-page document filled with ideas and possible points of collaboration down the road, and I suggested that he start a foundation.  Not long after, Julian launched his charity, The White Feather Foundation.

Julian Blog White FeatherWhite Feather refers to Julian’s experience and belief that his dad reached out to him after he was killed – that if Julian ever saw a white feather, he should know John was present for him.  Time passes so quickly.  White Feather was started several years ago now.  Its work is huge.  It embraces environmental and humanitarian issues in conjunction with partners from all around the world, raising funds for a more sustainable world for every living being. White Feather has done everything from supporting artists to marching to end bullying to building an orphanage in Sri Lanka.  One project at a time, White Feather builds better lives and stronger communities.  In 2008, Julian was honored by the Better World Environmental Award by Prince Albert of Monaco.Julian Blog Single-1

And his legacy work doesn’t stop with White Feather – or his music – or his breathtaking photography. Julian has also invested his time, over the last several years, buying and gathering memorabilia of his father’s life and the Beatles’ long journey.  In 2011 he published a beautiful coffee table book entitled “Beatles Memorabilia: The Julian Lennon Collection” featuring many of these valuable artifacts.

Julian Blog AlbumToday Jules releases the single “Someday” from his newest CD “Everything Changes”; the CD is a breathtaking collection of some of the most beautiful tunes he has ever written – and he took his time with it.  It took several years before Jules was ready to release this latest compilation & it was well worth the wait.

Looking at his 50th year, you cannot miss that Julian has carved “legacy” everywhere in his life.  He has built careers as both a musician and a photographer – and now as a curator of his father’s memory.  One memory and memento at a time, Julian gathers the pieces, near and far, and builds on the memory and the journey, one feather – and one step at a time.  I can’t wait to see what Jules does next, but whatever it is it will have meaning and impact, and I’ll be there to support his efforts.

A Lennon Legacy

I’d like to think that we all have heroes, that everyone out there, no matter how successful they are, takes the time to have someone to look up to and admire. John Lennon was always that hero to me.  He lived by his own rules and made a mark that only grows stronger over time.  A few years ago, I was lucky enough to meet his oldest son, Julian, and to share a deeply moving conversation about his dad and the work that he did – and to discuss the work that Julian has created through his charity, The White Feather Foundation.

The White Feather Foundation was started over 20 years ago and embraces environmental and humanitarian issues in conjunction with partners from all around the world, raising funds for a more sustainable, better world for every living being. White Feather has done everything from supporting artists to marching to end bullying to building an orphanage in Sri Lanka.  One project at a time, Julian’s Foundation builds better lives and stronger communities.  In 2008, he was honored by the Better World Environmental Award by Prince Albert of Monaco.

It’s not easy for artists today – the entire industry has changed and then changed gain.  While being fathered by a giant among men, Julian has never been one to stand on the shoulders of his dad, John.   He has carved his own careers as both a musician and a photographer. He has brilliantly built the one thing ALL of us should define and design every day – an inspiring legacy that changes and betters the world of others.

Julian’s latest album, Everything Changes, will be released worldwide early 2013.  In the meantime, we will all wait impatiently, and hopefully support his great work with White Feather.  To send a donation, go to https://WhiteFeatherFoundation.com

Remembering John Lennon – 30 Years Later

Like much of the world, I’ve spent the last week thinking about John Lennon and the anniversary of his death on December 8th.  It’s honestly hard to believe that thirty years have passed since he was taken from us in a single moment’s insanity.  In fact, most of the time, it’s hard to believe that John’s really gone at all.  His was far more than the voice of a generation – it was often the voice of our hearts and our conscience.

And as unimaginable as it is to hold space for the thirty years of unspoken words and unwritten songs, what I truly cannot get away from this week is the rest of John.  As great a man as he was, and as truly generous a soul – especially to his fellow musicians – for two men out there, John Lennon wasn’t a Beatle – or an icon – he was simply Dad.

I met Julian Lennon for the first time several years ago.  I was struck with how gracious he was and how engaging – how much he reminded me of his father and how strongly he had aligned with his Dad’s passion for peace and conservation.  But I was also captured by the deep sadness he seemed to bear, just under that gracious surface.  I remember sharing with Julian how sorry I was for his loss – and recognizing how he had lost his dad, twice really.  It was a deeply heartfelt conversation and a genuine connection.  In a career filled with world=renowned musicians and many celebrity relationships – it is one that has stayed with me at a core level.

Julian has his own voice of course.  His new album “Everything Changes” should be out by next year, and in October he helped his mom, Cynthia Lennon, publicize the John Lennon Peace Monument in Liverpool. And Sean has found his own path as well, now co-leading a band with his musician / model girlfriend, Charlotte Kemp Muhl (Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger.)

But all successes aside, it’s still Julian I think of often – and Sean.  How the thread of their lives with their dad, John Lennon, was forever cut short by something so senseless and beyond comprehension. I have always been struck by how much Julian looks and sounds like his father – in the way that only fathers and sons can.  In fact, one of my career aspirations has always been to create a benefit concert with Julian and Paul McCartney around John Lennon’s music.  To use the talents I have to honor how much was left unsaid, by one of the people who most deserved to hear it – his son.  Julian embodies his own gifts and talents along with his father’s.

I suppose that is really my attempt to make sense of these things – this loss – to find some deeper meaning.  To find some thread of understanding that will provide some peace – for Julian and for the rest of us. To knit a golden thread through time and space and recapture one of the greatest voices of humanity, and to simply risk listening and hearing what we MIGHT some day achieve – if we would only imagine.  John’s greatest gifts were surely his music and  his wish for peace and love which inspired and sparked a generation.  And we are truly fortunate that his legacy and grace endures and burns most brightly in Sean and Julian.
